Gardens and Landscapes - Carte Blanche to Alexandre Benjamin Navet

9 May - 30 June 2022

Gardens and Landscapes – Carte Blanche to Alexandre Benjamin Navet comes as a desire to get out of the frame, to breath some fresh air in the heart of the city. The ornamentation of columns and decorative panels draws a singular and harmonious perception of the space directly engaging the visitor’s imagination. For the occasion, two large-size paintings have been produced to create a dialogue and an encounter between Paris and London through the theme of the gardens. After months of lockdown, Alexandre Benjamin Navet reinvents the tradition of landscape panting through a vibrating stroke on a large-scale wallpaper. His drawings echo the shapes of Henri Matisse and the compositions of David Hockney. The thriving colours evoke the delight of being reunited and open bright perspectives for the future.

This exhibition parallels Alexandre Benjamin Navet’s upcoming solo show related to Parisian gardens and the blooming of colour, at the Galerie Derouillon in Paris this summer.

Alexandre Benjamin Navet was born in 1986 in France and graduated from ENSCI–Les Ateliers, École nationale supérieure de création industrielle (Paris) in 2011. His artistic practice is multidisciplinary, ranging from interior and textile design to pastel watercolour drawings and frescoes. Although based in Paris, Alexandre Benjamin Navet maintains a privileged relationship with the South of France that inspires his colourful visual universe of simplified volumes modelled by strong light contrasts and perspectives games. Often in situ, his installations are close to theatrical settings. For designer Pierre Yovanovitch, “Alexandre reinterprets a style from the ’40s and ’50s in a very contemporary but also a very humorous way. His work is reminiscent of Jean Cocteau but with a totally unique approach.”

Alexandre Benjamin Navet won the Grand Prix Design Parade Toulon - Van Cleef & Arpels, at Villa Noailles in 2017. He realized several in-situ installations for Van Cleef & Arpels at Fifth Avenue, New York, Place Vendôme, Paris, Ginza Maison, Tokyo (2020, 2021, 2022); Hermès at Avenue George V store opening, Paris (2018) and for The Conservatory, Hudson Yard, New York (2019).  He took part to the exhibition Design Parade Toulon, International Festival of Interior Design, Villa Noailles, Hyères (2018), «Nouvelles vagues», Collections Design Centre Pompidou, Festival Design Parade Toulon (2019), «Manière Matière» at Grand Palais, Paris (2019), «Un printemps incertain», Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris (2021).  Several solo shows were also dedicated to his works: «Project 2» at Galerie Derouillon, Hôtel Cromot du Bourg, Paris (2019), «Espèces d’espaces» at Musée des Arts Décoratifs Paris (2019), «From the living room to the patio», Art Brussels, Galerie Derouillon (2019), «July», Galerie Derouillon (2020), site-specific project at Hôtel des Arts, Festival Design Parade, Toulon (2020), «Jardins», Galerie Derouillon (upcoming).

Exhibition is organised together with the Institut Francais.
