A word from the Chair

Dear visitor, dear friend,

Welcome to this website. In my role as the elected Chair, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Pan-African Parliament (DPAP).

The EU-Africa partnership is guided by the Joint Africa-EU Strategy (JAES), which is progressively implemented through triannual roadmaps and action plans. At the last summit, held in November 2017 in Abidjan, African and EU leaders focused on job creation, especially for young people. The JAES sets out the willingness to move beyond a donor/recipient relationship towards long-term cooperation on jointly identified mutual interests. The next EU-AU Summit is foreseen to take place probably in the first half of 2021, and might set a new comprehensive EU-AU cooperation strategy, based on the acquis from JAES, while the Cotonou Partnership Agreement expired in February 2020 and is currently being renegotiated.

The duty of our parliamentary Delegation is to ensure that the European Parliament develops a coherent strategy to foster the progress of both processes. In my view, our foremost priority is to make significant advances on the four joint political priorities agreed at the last AU-EU Summit:

1. Boost and mobilise investments for African structural sustainable transformation,
2. Invest in people through education, science, technology and skills development,
3. Strengthen resilience, peace, security and governance,
4. Address the current challenges in migration and mobility.

Today, the relations between the European Union and Africa are at a turning point: climate change, economic growth, job creation, demography, sustainable development, trade and investment are just some of the common urgent challenges that we face on both sides of the Mediterranean. Only 17 kilometres separate our two continents. We must address these challenges together, by working in closer cooperation and with stronger political ambition.
