“Unilateral military operation in north east Syria is a security risk to us all”

Leading the European Parliament delegation of six members, Kris Peeters (EPP, Belgium) addressed the 65th NATO Parliamentary Assembly in London (11-14 October 2019) and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the security implications of Turkey's unilateral military intervention in north east Syria.

Mr Peeters said: "Past achievements do not guarantee future success. Multilateralism is at the core of the Alliance and of the EU and the trust we put in our allies is crucial. This military operation in north east Syria is putting our security and that of our organisations at risk."

Kris Peeters asked for a meeting of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) in order to address the dire situation in north east Syria and to avoid more suffering of civilians, destabilisation and the population being displaced, which was supported by many other delegations.

Russian actions prompt NATO and EU to improve military mobility in Europe

Since 2014, Russia's manoeuvres in the vicinity of the EU and NATO and the multiple incursions into airspace or maritime space has prompted NATO to develop a new policy of capacity building in the east (Poland, Romania, the Baltics) to be ready for a rapid response.

There are three priority areas for the EU and NATO in connection with military mobility: transport corridors for heavy equipment, adequate infrastructure for its transport and the review of regulatory standards that block the rapid movement of troops and equipment across borders. In the next multiannual financial framework for the period 2021-2027, the EU has planned to finance military mobility with EUR 6.5 billion.
