About
Chair's Welcome Words

Welcome to the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON). The Committee is responsible for Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the regulation of financial services, the free movement of capital, payments, taxation, competition policies, and the international financial system.
The Committee is at the centre of Parliament's work in these policy areas, as agenda-setter vis-à-vis the Commission through Own-initiative reports, as co-legislator with the Council adopting legislation, and through public scrutiny of i.a. Commissioners, finance ministers and the ECB President, as well as the chairpersons of relevant EU agencies. Scrutiny of the executive branch is crucial for democratic control and oversight, and helps the Committee in the evaluation of legislation and the follow-up legislative drafting.
As concerns taxation policies, the Committee is assisted by the Subcommittee on Tax Matters (FISC).
