Statement by Lynn Boylan on 30 new settlements in occupied West Bank

Brussels, 13 April 2026

"I condemn the decision of the Israeli cabinet to authorise the establishment of 30 new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

"Such a significant expansion of settlement activity, including in sensitive areas within Palestinian enclaves, actively undermines the viability of the two-state solution and exacerbates an already fragile situation on the ground.

"Settlements are illegal under international law and constitute a serious obstacle to a just and lasting peace. At a time of heightened tensions, unilateral actions of this kind risk further destabilising the situation and eroding prospects for a negotiated solution.

"I recall that the European Parliament condemned the policies of advancing Israeli settlements in the West Bank and called for the EU to step up measures against violent settlers.

"Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement is clear that the Agreement is predicated on human rights. Settlement expansion is an active violation of the human rights of the Palestinian people and cannot continue without consequence.

"I call on the Israeli authorities to halt settlement expansion and to fully comply with their obligations under international law".
