DELEGATION FOR RELATIONS WITH JAPAN

HISTORICAL SUMMARY

Subjects discussed

The Delegation for relations with Japan is one of the most ancient ones in the European Parliament, as a first meeting took place immediately after the first direct elections.

Originally, trade matters inevitably dominated discussions between the two delegations, together with economic and monetary questions. But agendas have traditionally also included cultural exchanges and scientific and technological cooperation.

More recently political issues (such as the role of Europe and Japan in the post-cold war era, the future role of the UN and its peace-keeping missions, international aid and assistance for Russia and the CIS) formed increasingly an important part of the discussions.

The rhythm of interparliamentary meetings is a very regular one. The next step should probably be to foster more direct relations at Committee level, as well as exchanges of officials, as this is the case for some other active delegations (notably USA, Canada).
