Objection formulée conformément à l’article 114, paragraphe 3, du règlement intérieur: Cadre de l’Union pour le calcul national du potentiel de réchauffement planétaire tout au long du cycle de vie EN

Explications de vote écrites

I opposed this objection to a delegated act under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. This was a technical measure setting out a calculation methodology for Global Warming Potential (GWP). The objection was tabled by right-wing MEPs who are ideologically opposed to the just energy transition and the Directive. They argued that renovation requirements under the Directive will increase energy poverty, despite the fact that energy-inefficient housing is one of the main drivers of energy poverty. Blaming increasing housing prices on environmental policies is an unfounded scapegoating of climate action which ignores the real reasons for the housing crisis.

Objection formulée conformément à l’article 114, paragraphe 3, du règlement intérieur: Liste des projets d’intérêt commun et des projets d’intérêt mutuel de l’Union EN

Explications de vote écrites

I voted in favour of this objection against the EU's list of ‘Projects of Common Interest’ (PCI List). This list grants EU priority status to a number of energy infrastructure projects that risk locking the EU into a dependence on fossil-fuel based hydrogen for home heating, while we should be prioritising limited renewable hydrogen resources for industrial and heavy transport purposes. Additionally, the list lends EU support to the East Med pipeline which will source gas sold by Israel, but coming from Palestinian offshore resources. In its 2024 Advisory Opinion, the International Court of Justice found this to be illegal.
I do not object to the renewable energy infrastructure included on the PCI list. This objection specifically called for more support to be given to renewable electricity infrastructure instead of hydrogen pipelines.
