20/12/2020 - HR/VP video blog - Latin America & the Caribbean is a part of the world with which we have great political, historical and cultural affinity, and with which we are united by very important institutional and economic ties. HR/VP Josep Borrell explained us why this partnership matters so much to the EU.

Well, we have been in Berlin discussing about Latin America. We had a big meeting with all the Latin American Ministers. It's time to talk about Latin America and put it more on the radar and on the agenda of the European Union.

What was the objective of the EU-Latin America and Caribbean Informal Ministerial Meeting?

It's been five years since there was a summit between Europe and Latin America. This is an anomaly in the relations between Europeans and that part of the world with which we have very close political, historical and cultural affinity and with which we are linked by very important institutional and economic ties. That is why this ministerial meeting was particularly important to mark a point of reunion and to open up ways of improving our cooperation and our political dialogue.

Latin America-Europe: the 'other' transatlantic relationship

18/10/2020 - HR/VP blog - At our last Foreign Affairs Council, we took stock of our relations with Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) at a time when this region is going through a dramatic crisis because of COVID-19. This was also much needed because the region has lately not been high enough on our agenda: we must reverse this trend.

Our partnership with Latin America contains a paradox: despite having much in common, our interactions remain well below their potential. With Latin America, we share indeed languages, culture, history and religion... An important part of the Latin American population are descendants of Europeans migrants from 16th to the 20th centuries who left in search of a new 'promised land'. Buenos Aires or Santiago look like European cities. From many points of view, we are the most like-minded people in the world.

15/12/2020 - Blog del AR/VP - Ayer, 14 de diciembre tuvo lugar una reunión informal de Ministros de Exteriores de la UE, América Latina y el Caribe a iniciativa de la Presidencia Alemana. Se trató de una reunión muy esperada y oportuna, para dar el reconocimiento que la Unión Europea debe dar a nuestra "otra" relación transatlántica.

Aunque pude desplazarme a Berlín para presidir esta reunión, junto al ministro de Exteriores alemán Heiko Maas, la reunión se celebró en formato virtual. Nos centramos en dos temas clave: la acción conjunta para paliar el impacto del Coronavirus y la recuperación a medio y largo plazo, con dos objetivos fundamentales: la transición ecológica y la transición digital.

Joint Communiqué: EU27 - Latin America and Caribbean Informal Ministerial Meeting

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the countries of the European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) today met in an informal Ministerial Meeting. This meeting was hosted by the Foreign Minister of Germany, Heiko Maas, for the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU, and chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission (HR/VP), Josep Borrell Fontelles in Berlin. Due to the restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic, all other 48 participating Foreign Ministers joined the meeting online in a virtual format.

Thank you to all of you,

Good afternoon,

[Today] we are going to meet with the Foreign [Affairs] Ministers from Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. Even if we do that virtually, it is [a] very important [meeting].

And I want to thank you, Heiko [Maas], for making this possible. The fact that we can meet here, in Berlin, with our colleagues from Latin America and the Caribbean speaks a lot about your personal investment in building stronger ties with the region. I thank you a lot for pushing for it, because it is very important for Europe to push Latin America higher on the agenda.

If you allow me, Heiko [Mass], since I am unable to continue in German, I will do that in Spanish.[...]

EEAS Statement of 26 September 2019 on EU and Pacific Alliance deepening partnership

The European Union and Pacific Alliance commit to deepening their partnership

Today, in New York City, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini and the Council of Ministers of the Pacific Alliance composed of Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, signed a Joint Declaration, in which they agreed to deepen the partnership between the two regional blocs.

High Representative Mogherini said at the occasion: "The European Union is committed to strengthening its political, economic and cooperation ties with the Pacific Alliance. The Alliance is a driver of regional integration in Latin America, with whom we have a solid friendship and we share fundamental values, a strong belief in multilateralism and a joint commitment in promoting the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals".

DECLARATION

1. We, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States(CELAC) and the European Union (EU), and the High Representative of the European Union forForeign Affairs and Security Policy met in Brussels, Belgium the 16th and 17th July 2018, at thesecond stand-alone Ministerial meeting under the theme "Building bridges and strengthening ourpartnership to face global challenges". Reaffirming our common acquis as developed throughprevious Summits and Ministerial declarations and taking into account the recommendationsemanating from the assessment of the programmes and actions adopted by the Summits, we wishto underline the following joint views and commitments. CELAC Summits and earlier EU-LAC Summits

The regional summit between the EU and the Community of Latin America and Caribbean states (CELAC) bring together European, Latin American and Caribbean leaders to strengthen relations between both regions. These summits are the main forums for dialogue and cooperation between Europe, and Latin American and Caribbean states.

These summit meetings represent an extension of the EU-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) summits that had been held since 1999. In 2010, at the summit held in Mexico, 33 LAC countries decided to merge the Rio Group and the CALC (Summit of Latin America and the Caribbean on Development and Cooperation) into one forum: the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
