Voorstellen van het Europees Parlement voor de wijziging van de Verdragen (A9-0337/2023 - Guy Verhofstadt, Sven Simon, Gabriele Bischoff, Daniel Freund, Helmut Scholz) EN

Schriftelijke stemverklaringen

I strongly support further European integration and deepening of the cooperation within the European Union. The Union needs reforms that will allow it to function more efficiently in the face of contemporary geopolitical, economic and social challenges.
The report of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, which was subject of the debate and votes this week in the European Parliament, included many valid demands, including: deepening EU cooperation in the fields of health, energy, as well as foreign policy, security and defence.
At the same time, however, the way in which the report was prepared, and in particular the inclusion of many far-reaching proposals that had no real support in the European Parliament, meant that the report was adopted by a very small majority (291 votes in favour, 274 against, 44 votes abstaining).
Taking into account deep divisions that emerged after the rejection of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe in 2005, we should strive to ensure that the reform of the European Union is based on a broad compromise, which was missing during the work on the said report of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs. It is for these reasons that I have decided today not to support this document in the plenary vote of the European Parliament.
